German Comparison & Difference Vocabulary
This set covers how German talks about sameness and difference: gleich, unterschiedlich, and vergleichen do most of the daily work. The trap for English speakers is derselbe, which isn't a fixed word but a compound that declines like an article plus adjective (denselben, derselben), unlike English's invariant 'the same'.

How to learn this set
Several verbs here share prefixes that hint at meaning: vergleichen (compare) and der Vergleich share a root with gleich, so if you know gleich = same, the ver- prefix pattern clicks fast. Notice too that unterscheiden, der Unterschied, and unterschiedlich all come from the same stem meaning 'to cut apart' - drill them as one family rather than three separate words. For the nouns, learn der Unterschied, der Vergleich, der Gegensatz, and der Kontrast together since all four take der, which removes one layer of guessing.

What is the difference between gleich and ähnlich in German?
Gleich means identical or equal, while ähnlich means similar but not the same. Zwei Autos sind gleich means they're the same model or exactly alike; zwei Autos sind ähnlich means they look alike but have differences.
What's the difference between unterschiedlich and verschieden?
They overlap a lot and are often interchangeable. Verschieden leans toward 'various, distinct items' (verschiedene Farben = various colors), while unterschiedlich leans toward 'differing in degree' (unterschiedliche Meinungen = differing opinions). In many sentences either works.
Is der Unterschied the same as der Kontrast?
No. Der Unterschied is a neutral difference between two things, while der Kontrast is a strong, visible contrast, like light against dark. You'd say der Unterschied in Gehalt but der Kontrast zwischen Schwarz und Weiß.
