German War & Peace Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of armed conflict and its aftermath: der Krieg and der Friede sit at the center, surrounded by words like die Belagerung, der Aufstand, and der Flüchtling. One trap here is der Aufruhr versus der Aufstand: English speakers often reach for one word (uprising or unrest) when German distinguishes turmoil/riot from a more organized rebellion, and mixing them up changes the tone of a sentence more than you'd expect.

How to learn this set
Several nouns here are built from verbs you already know: der Aufstand comes from aufstehen (to stand up), der Aufruhr from a root meaning to stir up, and die Belagerung from belagern. Learn the verb-noun pairs together, especially belagern/die Belagerung and rebellieren/die Revolte, so the connection sticks. For gender, notice that most of the abstract conflict nouns (die Invasion, die Revolte, die Hungersnot, die Schlacht) are feminine, while the concrete hardware (das Maschinengewehr) and the people caught in events (der Flüchtling, der Kriegsgefangener) split along der/das lines you'll want to drill separately with articles, not word lists.

Frequently asked questions
What is the German word for peace treaty?
Technically it's der Friedensvertrag. Der Friedensabkommen (as listed) mixes genders in real usage — das Abkommen is neuter, so you'll often see das Friedensabkommen. Either way, the root is der Friede, peace.
What is the difference between der Aufstand, der Putsch, and die Revolte?
Der Aufstand is a broad uprising or rebellion by a group of people. Der Putsch is a specific, often sudden attempt to seize power, usually by a small group like the military. Die Revolte is closer to a riot or revolt, often smaller and less organized than either.
Is der Krieg or der Friede more commonly used in German news?
Der Krieg dominates headlines about active conflicts like der Nahostkonflikt, while der Friede shows up mostly in the context of negotiations, treaties, and peace talks. Both are common, but der Krieg appears far more often in daily reporting.
