German Crime & Police Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you need to read a German crime report: who did what to whom, and what happened to them afterward. You'll learn the difference between der Dieb (thief) and der Einbrecher (burglar), and between der Täter, the neutral word for "perpetrator" used in police language, and der Verbrecher, the more judgmental word for "criminal". One trap: der Betrug means "fraud" or "deception", not "betrayal", so don't confuse it with English "betray" even though it looks related.

How to learn this set
Notice how many words here share roots with clear verb-noun pairs: stehlen gives you der Dieb (thief) but not *der Stehler, while einbrechen gives you both der Einbrecher and der Einbruch, so drill that verb-to-noun jump specifically. Also group the male/female pairs together as you learn them: der Täter/die Täterin, der Verbrecher/die Verbrecherin, der Einbrecher/die Einbrecherin, since they all follow the same -in pattern and it's easier to fix the pattern once than to relearn it six times. Separately, bestechen (to bribe), die Bestechung (bribery), and das Bestechungsgeld (bribe money) form a tight family worth learning as a block rather than as three unrelated words.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between der Täter and der Verbrecher?
Der Täter is the neutral, factual term used in police and legal reports for whoever committed an act, it just means "the one who did it" and doesn't imply guilt has been proven. Der Verbrecher is a judgmental everyday word meaning "criminal" or "crook", the kind of word you'd use in conversation, not in a police statement.
Is Einbruch the same as Diebstahl?
No. Der Einbruch specifically means breaking into a place (from einbrechen, to break in), while der Diebstahl is the act of stealing itself, which can happen without any break-in, like pocket theft. A burglary (Einbruch) usually includes a Diebstahl, but not every Diebstahl involves an Einbruch.
Why does festnehmen mean to arrest and not just "to take firmly"?
Festnehmen is a separable verb built from fest (firm, fixed) and nehmen (to take), and together they form the fixed legal meaning "to arrest" or "to take into custody". You'll usually meet it in passive news language, e.g. "Der Täter wurde festgenommen" (the perpetrator was arrested).
