German History & the Past Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you need to talk about historical periods and turning points in German, from die Antike and das Mittelalter through die Aufklärung to die Wiedervereinigung. One trap for English speakers: historisch doesn't just mean "historical" in the neutral sense, it can also mean "historic" as in momentous, so Germans sometimes need historisch bedeutsam to be unambiguous. Note too that die Revolution and die Reformation keep their Latin-derived shape close to English, but die Aufklärung (literally "clearing up") is a genuinely German coinage with no cognate to lean on.

How to learn this set
Several words here share endings that predict gender: die Aufklärung, die Eroberung and die Wiedervereinigung all end in -ung and are feminine, a pattern that holds almost without exception in German. Compounds are worth taking apart rather than memorizing whole: der Sklavenhalter splits into Sklave + Halter, and das Ancien Régime aside, most of the toughest C1 words here (der Anachronismus, die Dynastie, der Feudalismus) are actually easier than they look once you notice they're near-direct borrowings from French or Latin. Drill der Kreuzzug, die Inquisition and die Reformation together since they cluster around the same few centuries of European history and tend to show up in the same reading passages. For das Wappen and das Hakenkreuz, learn them with an image in mind, since both are visual symbols and the meaning sticks faster than with a translation alone.

Frequently asked questions
Is das Mittelalter always capitalized in German?
Yes, it's a noun so it's capitalized as das Mittelalter, unlike the English 'middle ages' which is often lowercase. It's also always singular in German, so you can't make it plural like some English speakers try to do.
What is the German word for era or age?
Both die Epoche and das Zeitalter work for era or age, and they overlap a lot. Das Zeitalter tends to name a whole age defined by one dominant feature (das Zeitalter der Aufklärung), while die Epoche is the more neutral term historians use to carve up time into periods.
Why is Sklaverei feminine but Sklavenhalter masculine?
Die Sklaverei is feminine because of the -ei ending, a suffix that reliably produces feminine abstract nouns in German (like die Bäckerei or die Metzgerei). Der Sklavenhalter is masculine because it's a compound built on der Halter (holder), describing a person, not an abstract concept.
