German Data & Statistics Vocabulary

This set covers the vocabulary you need to talk about numbers and data in German: die Statistik, der Durchschnitt, die Stichprobe, and their related terms. One trap here is der Schnitt, which sits right next to der Durchschnitt and can mean either 'average' or 'section/cut' depending on context, so you have to watch how it's used. Another is Nummer, which looks like it should mean 'number' in the mathematical sense but usually refers to an identifying number (like a phone number), not a quantity.

How to learn this set

Notice that der Datensatz and das Datenset are competing terms for the same thing, so you effectively get one concept for the price of two words, worth drilling as a pair rather than separately. Also group der Durchschnitt, der Mittelwert, and der Schnitt together since they overlap in meaning around 'average', and practice them in the fixed phrase im Durchschnitt / im Schnitt to lock in which preposition goes with which noun. For die Schwankung and die Stichprobe, both feminine and both statistics-specific, build sentences around real data scenarios (Schwankungen in den Ergebnissen, eine repräsentative Stichprobe) instead of memorizing the words in isolation.

Frequently asked questions

Was ist der Unterschied zwischen Durchschnitt und Mittelwert?

In everyday German, der Durchschnitt and der Mittelwert are used interchangeably for 'average'. Der Mittelwert shows up more in technical or scientific writing, while der Durchschnitt is what you'll hear in normal conversation, as in 'im Durchschnitt' (on average).

Datensatz oder Datenset - welches Wort benutzt man?

Both mean 'dataset' and both are correct. Der Datensatz is the older, more established term and still dominates in academic and official German; das Datenset is a newer, more casual import that you'll see in tech and business contexts.

Was bedeutet Größenordnung auf Englisch?

Die Größenordnung means 'order of magnitude', as in a rough scale rather than an exact figure. You'll hear it in phrases like 'in der Größenordnung von...' (in the range of...) when someone is giving an approximate number.
