German Equality & Discrimination Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of social inequality in German: die Diskriminierung, die Ausgrenzung, and der Sündenbock give you the language to talk about how groups get excluded or blamed, while die Gleichberechtigung and die Gleichheit cover the positive counterpart. One trap for English speakers: die Aneignung looks like it should mean something neutral like "acquisition," but in discussions of race and culture it almost always means cultural appropriation, a loaded political term, not a dictionary-neutral one.

How to learn this set
Almost every noun here ends in -ung or -heit/-keit, and all of those are automatically feminine: die Ausgrenzung, die Unterdrückung, die Diskriminierung, die Gleichheit, die Ungleichheit. Learn that ending pattern once and you get the gender for free on about a dozen words in this set. It also pays to learn unterdrücken and die Unterdrückung together, and benachteiligen alongside die Benachteiligung it implies, since German builds the noun straight off the verb stem with no surprises.

Was ist der Unterschied zwischen Vorurteil und Stereotyp?
Ein Vorurteil is a judgment about a person or group, usually negative, formed without real evidence. Ein Stereotyp is the fixed, simplified image behind that judgment, the mental template that the Vorurteil draws on. In practice Germans use them almost interchangeably, but Stereotyp is the more neutral, descriptive term.
Ist Gleichberechtigung dasselbe wie Gleichheit?
No. Die Gleichheit means equality in a general or factual sense, two things being the same. Die Gleichberechtigung specifically means equal rights under the law, so it's the word used for gender equality (Gleichberechtigung der Geschlechter) or equal treatment in legal and political contexts.
Warum steht Diskriminierung im Wörterbuch mit zwei r?
It's not a typo you need to worry about, but a spelling worth double-checking: die Diskriminierung has one r after the k and one before -ung, and it's easy to accidentally add or drop one when writing fast. The verb diskriminieren follows the same pattern.
