German Ethics & Morality Vocabulary List
This set covers the vocabulary of right and wrong: die Moral for the values people actually live by, die Ethik for the philosophical study of those values, and die Deontologie for the specific theory that judges actions by duty rather than outcome. One trap for English speakers: die Moral looks like "morale" but has nothing to do with troop spirit \u2013 it means morality, plain and simple.

How to learn this set
Seven of the nine nouns here are feminine, and that's not an accident: German abstract nouns describing qualities or conditions (die Unschuld, die Gewaltlosigkeit, die Unsittlichkeit) overwhelmingly take die, so if you're guessing on a new abstract noun, die is often the safer bet. Notice also how negation works by prefix rather than a separate word: Unschuld is Schuld (guilt) turned inside out with un-, and Unsittlichkeit is built the same way from Sittlichkeit. Drill the adjective-noun pairs together instead of separately \u2013 moralisch with Moral, sündhaft with Sünde \u2013 since the noun's meaning anchors the adjective and you'll remember both at once. For der Gräuel, the odd man out as a masculine noun, just memorize it on its own since it doesn't share the pattern.

Is Moral the same as English 'morale'?
No, that's a false friend. Die Moral means morality or moral principles, not troop morale or team spirit – German has no direct one-word equivalent for that, you'd say so etwas wie Kampfgeist or Motivation instead.
What's the difference between Ethik and Moral in German?
Moral refers to the actual values and norms a person or society lives by, while Ethik is the philosophical study of those values – the same split as English 'morals' vs 'ethics', so the concepts transfer cleanly.
Why is Unschuld feminine when it doesn't end in a typical feminine suffix?
Unschuld is built from schuld (guilt/fault) with the negating prefix un-, and it simply inherited the gender of die Schuld – German abstract nouns formed this way almost always keep the base word's gender.
