German Professional Skills Vocabulary
This set covers how German talks about being good at your job: die Kompetenz, die Erfahrung, and die Zuverlässigkeit are the words that show up in every reference letter and job ad. One trap for English speakers is Expertise: it can mean expertise in the English sense, but Germans often use it for a formal written assessment or report, not just accumulated know-how. Sachverstand is closer to what English speakers usually mean by 'expertise' as a personal quality.

How to learn this set
Almost every noun here is feminine: die Kenntnisse, die Erfahrung, die Fähigkeit, die Kompetenz, die Zuverlässigkeit, die Genauigkeit, die Spezialisierung, die Befähigung, die Kunstfertigkeit, die Leistungsfähigkeit all take die, so drill them as one block rather than memorizing gender word by word. Notice how -keit and -heit turn adjectives into abstract nouns: zuverlässig becomes die Zuverlässigkeit, genau becomes die Genauigkeit, this pattern alone will let you guess a dozen other job-related nouns you haven't studied yet. Leistungsfähigkeit is worth taking apart piece by piece: Leistung (performance) plus fähig (capable) plus -keit, and once you see that, Hochleistung and Befähigung stop looking like separate vocabulary and start looking like the same building blocks rearranged.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Kompetenz and Kenntnisse in German?
Kompetenz is your overall ability to handle a task or field well; Kenntnisse are the specific pieces of knowledge or skills you've picked up, almost always used in the plural. You'd say 'gute EDV-Kenntnisse' for concrete computer skills, but 'soziale Kompetenz' for a broader people-handling ability.
Is Expertise the same as Sachverstand in German?
They overlap, but Sachverstand leans toward sound practical judgment built from real experience, while Expertise often points to a formal specialist opinion or report. A Gutachter delivers Expertise; a seasoned mechanic has Sachverstand.
Why is Fähigkeit sometimes translated as 'ability' and sometimes as 'skill'?
English splits an innate capacity (ability) from a trained one (skill), but German uses Fähigkeit for both. Context tells you which is meant: 'die Fähigkeit zu lernen' is a general capacity, while 'handwerkliche Fähigkeiten' are trained skills.
