Learn die Rente cold first, then the compounds fall into place because they just bolt a qualifier onto it (Alters-, Früh-, Betriebs-). A second cluster runs on Ruhestand/ruhen: der Ruhestand and der Vorruhestand pair with the verb ausmustern, which literally means pulling something out of active service, so picture retiring a machine or a soldier, not just a person.
