German Technology & Innovation Vocabulary
This set covers the language of modern tech and how it gets made: die Automatisierung, die Digitalisierung, and die künstliche Intelligenz sit alongside the older, more basic die Technik and der Roboter. One thing to watch: English speakers often use "technology" for everything, but German splits this into Technik (technology/technique in general) and Technologie (specific, often advanced tech) \u2013 mixing them up is a common mistake even at higher levels.

How to learn this set
Notice that almost every abstract noun ending in -ung here is feminine: die Automatisierung, die Digitalisierung, die Erfindung, die Neuerung, die Virtualisierung. Once you see that pattern, you stop guessing gender and start recognizing it on sight, even for new -ung words outside this list. It's also worth drilling erfinden alongside die Erfindung together, since the verb-to-noun link (erfinden \u2192 Erfindung) is exactly how German builds most of its tech vocabulary from a small set of roots. For the compounds, break them apart: Gesichtserkennung is just Gesicht (face) + Erkennung (recognition), which makes it far easier to remember than trying to learn it as one long block.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Technik and Technologie in German?
Technik is the broader, older word covering technology, technique, and engineering in general – you use it for everyday tech and skills. Technologie is more specific to advanced or scientific technology, often used in formal or business contexts like Biotechnologie or Nanotechnologie.
Is Software masculine, feminine, or neuter in German?
Die Software is feminine, following the pattern of most German words borrowed from English ending in a soft, abstract-sounding syllable. It's also uncountable, so you don't add a plural -s the way you might expect from English.
What is the German word for artificial intelligence?
Künstliche Intelligenz, usually abbreviated KI, is the standard term. It's grammatically feminine (die künstliche Intelligenz) and the adjective künstlich stays lowercase unless it starts a sentence.
