German Unemployment & Job Hunting Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of losing a job and looking for a new one in Germany, from die Jobsuche itself to what happens if you get let go: der Streik, die Abfindung, and eventually das Arbeitslosengeld if you register as arbeitslos. One trap for English speakers: das Arbeitsamt looks like it should mean "work office" in some generic sense, but it's the specific, semi-official name Germans use for the government unemployment agency, now more formally called die Arbeitsagentur.

How to learn this set
Notice how many of these words are built from der Arbeit as a root: Arbeitsamt, Arbeitsagentur, Arbeitslosengeld, Arbeitslosigkeit, Arbeitsmarkt. Once you know arbeitslos (out of work), the suffix -igkeit turns it into die Arbeitslosigkeit (the state of being unemployed) and -engeld turns it into das Arbeitslosengeld (the money you get for being unemployed). Drill these five as a block by covering the Arbeit- prefix and testing yourself on just the endings, since that's where the gender and meaning actually live. For the C1 pair, die Erwerbsbeteiligung and der Fachkräftemangel, don't bother memorizing them as isolated vocabulary; instead read one German news paragraph about the Arbeitsmarkt where both terms show up together, since they're economics-report words that rarely appear in casual speech.

Frequently asked questions
Was ist der Unterschied zwischen Arbeitsamt und Jobcenter?
Das Arbeitsamt is the older, informal name most Germans still use in speech, though the official term now is die Bundesagentur für Arbeit (or die Arbeitsagentur). Das Jobcenter is a separate, related office that specifically handles long-term unemployed people and Arbeitslosengeld II (also called Hartz IV / Bürgergeld). In everyday conversation, though, people often use both terms loosely for 'the place you go when you lose your job.'
Ist Arbeitslosengeld dasselbe wie Abfindung?
No, they're paid by different parties for different reasons. Die Abfindung is a one-time severance payment from your employer, usually tied to how long you worked there. Das Arbeitslosengeld is ongoing monthly support from the state after you register as arbeitslos, unrelated to any payout from your old job.
Warum ist Arbeitslosigkeit weiblich aber der Arbeitsmarkt männlich?
German noun gender for compounds is set by the last component, not by logic connecting the two words. -igkeit is a suffix that always makes a noun die (like die Arbeitslosigkeit), while -markt is inherently der (der Markt, der Arbeitsmarkt). It's worth memorizing endings like -igkeit, -ung, and -mangel as gender shortcuts rather than guessing case by case.
